The Work

Primary Documents

An analyst reads filings, financial statements, and what a company reports about its own operations, and builds the financial picture from those rather than from a data provider’s version of them. The differences between the two are usually where the question is.

Conclusions

Work is carried to a recommendation. An analyst is expected to say what the position should be and why, and to be wrong in writing rather than vague in writing. A note that surveys a company without concluding anything is not finished.

Supervision

Direct, and from the people doing the same work. An analyst is given a company or an industry and held to the standard the firm holds its own research to, which is the only standard it has.
